An early look at Japan's Mother's Day trends for 2026
Although we're still a while away from Mother's Day, a new survey from Hibiya Kadan Co., Ltd. suggests that the occasion is becoming less about physical gifts and more about connection, which is something I can get behind! According to the company's annual Mother's Day Gift Giver and Recipient Survey, people are increasingly prioritizing time spent with family over material presents.
One of the biggest shifts is what mothers actually want. The number of respondents hoping to receive a gift has dropped sharply in recent years according to their research, falling from over 60% in 2024 to around 30% in 2026. More people now are putting value on shared experiences, quality time together, or a sweet message or letter. I think in today's fast-paced world, being present is becoming one of the most meaningful ways to show appreciation for someone.
Another interesting point from the research was that despite rising living costs, those buying gifts aren't cutting back on their Mother's Day budgets. Most respondents still plan to spend between ¥3,000 and ¥4,999.
When it comes to popular gifts, ready-to-display flower arrangements are now preferred over traditional bouquets. On a happy note, sustainability is also shaping choices, with both givers and recipients favoring plants and arrangements that last longer and reduce waste.

If you're a mother or buying for a mother, are these trends in line with what you want or what you'll be purchasing/spending?
