What are our consumer rights in Japan?
Do you know your consumer rights in Japan? And if so, would you be willing to share anything about them? For example, what is the policy on returns? I am very familiar with my consumer rights in my home country, and they are very widely publicized back home, but information doesn't seem to be as transparent or readily available here. Or is that just me?
Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com

Most of my purchases have lived up to expectations. But every once in a while, I buy a dud. Usually, the value of the goods isn't significant, so I haven't been motivated to find out how to return or get compensation for a crap item. My biggest concern about consumer products is LCA - Life Cycle Assessment, or cradle-to-grave. I'm looking at a half-dozen well-worn household items and wondering how to dispose of them ethically. Most of my dead 家電 are on a municipal schedule, and I know how to dispose of them. Tech like dead smartphones and tablets is a pain in the bum to get rid of. I have a box of defunct tech that is really hard to recycle.

This is something I admittedly don't know a great deal about. In my home country, there are a ton of different governmental bodies such as the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission), who are in charge of consumer protection and enforcing laws in that regard. I don't know if there's some sort of equivalent here, but I would love to know more about it if there is!

@TonetoEdo Both very relevant points - I very rarely have a reason to bring a product back in Japan, and I also find electronics hard to get rid of! But I do remember in my early days buying a skirt that I didn't try on in the store, but when I got home and tried it on it didn't fit properly. Because I was so used to the system in Ireland, I brought it along to the store expecting a full refund and I was very surprised that she was reluctant to take it back at all, even though the tags were still on it and it was obvious it hadn't been worn. And I was at a loss because I didn't know my rights. In the end, I volunteered to get the same skirt in a different size, but she was even reluctant to change it all. I have been ever so careful to get the right size since! In Ireland I would have gotten a full refund, no questions asked.

@genkidesu It's the same in Ireland. And they also print your "return" rights on your receipt or if you get the receipt electronically (much more common or people just don't get a receipt at all) it will have your rights in the email / text.

@BigfamJapan Woah, your account is insightful. I've never experienced returning an item.
