Any idea for snowboard destination?

What's the best ski resort in Japan that is accessible by bus or train? I have been to Nagano. Any other recommendations?

I would recommend Niigata Yuzawa's GALA. I have been there once, and the snow was amazing. The shinkansen reaches all the way there as well. The ryokan we stayed at was really nice too, with free bus that took us to the ski resort! With the recent snowfall, I am sure you will love the snow there!

Also recommend Gala Yuzawa for convenience, they have a seasonal shinkansen stop which makes it ultra easy from Tokyo - you can be there in about 80 minutes.

There are also some quality resorts around the Myoko Kogen area. You'd have to head to Myoko Kogen station and then catch the resort's shuttle bus to complete the journey.

@JapanRamen I have heard this place from my friend too. So definitely I'll count this in for my top 3 options. Thanks for the help!

Just as an update on this, one of my friends went to Gala Yuzawa just last week and he said it's the quietest he's ever seen it - he's born and raised in Niigata, so he skis there just about every year. Worth a visit if you want the place almost to yourself - if you can plan a mid-week visit that's probably your best bet!

There are a lot of good recommendations about this kind of thing which is pretty awesome. I will also recommend Gifu which is a great place given the fact that the atmosphere is pretty nice and chill (no pun intended).

@park Do you have any resort names that are good out that way? I never really thought of Gifu as a destination for skiing or boarding so it's cool to know there are options for people there!

I will be visiting Gifu this winter vacation. I heard a lot of good things about it from my friends. It is one of the most accessible winter destinations from Tokyo.

You might want to consider Niigata as well.

@Ekimsaido is there a resort name? I saw someone else mention Gifu but I honestly didn't know much about it as a winter destination for skiing or boarding!

For anyone who likes statistics this site has some info: https://surfsnow.jp/ranking/ It has rankings for different ski resorts, including things like the overall slope ranking, the ranking based on nearby amenities, and ranking based on the facilities at the resort.

I think it's also a good time to remind people to check out some ski resorts and what they offer in summertime. For instance, one of our local resorts here in Niigata turns into a mountain biking destination during green season!

What unusual items do you have in your emergency bag?

In honor of Disaster Prevention Day and further to the preparedness articles I just wrote, I am curious: what item/s do you have in your emergency bag aka disaster preparedness kit, that might not be common nationwide?

Reflections on our home countries after living in Japan

I think one thing living in Japan has given me is an appreciation of things my country does really well, and things it doesn't do so well in comparison to here. For instance, I think Australia is great with annual leave entitlements. You get four weeks automatically (some workplaces offer even more!) and there's not any guilt associated with taking it. Something we don't do so well is public transport. I know that Australia is a massive country, but there has been talk of creating a high speed rail option from Melbourne to Sydney for ages, and nothing has ever come of it. It's basically an 8 hour drive or flying. Also, inner city trains are regularly not on time. What are the things you think your home country does better or worse than Japan?

Hair Color Treatments for Greying Hair

For those of you who have colored grey hair, I'm curious about the hair color treatments available in most drugstores. They seem simpler to use than box dyes. It's been many years since I've colored my hair. It's a chestnut brown and my grey is more silver. I don't hate it but the grey is dry and making me feel like I look older than I am. I'm especially interested in the natural brands that are non-permanent. For example Rishiri Kombu sounds like a decent option. Looking forward to your recommendations and experience.
