Pretty but Can't Go In
While entry is still allowed for the smaller palace building, the main castle keep is not open to the public due to construction concerns regarding earthquake damage. This has beenthe case since 2018 and is sad to see. As someone lucky enough to have entered the main building back in 2008, I feel like my family was cheated a worthwhile experience in exchange for a subpar one. Still, many foreigners especially flock to the site to view it and buy souvenirs, but it is not the same as going all the way to the top and looking out over the city as one was once able to. There are some cool shops just outside the castle grounds with adorable options like ninja-themed corndogs and ice cream.
