In Karuizawa, the low-density shopping center Church Street is worth a look for the shops centred around a courtyard. A few dozen boutique shops (no chain stores) specialize in housewares, imported clothing, arts and crafts, and antiques. There are cafes and restaurants, too. The two floors of shops and a hotel are ranged around a courtyard with tables and parasols. One pretty feature is the landscaping with waterwheels. The wayfinding maps indicate St. Paul's, the church after which the street and centre are named. Pro tips - the shops and cafes are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and the public toilets are pay toilets.
