Cool valley in summer
When I have enough of roasting in the summer heat, I get away to the Yoro Valley. Most people might think it's an autumn colors view spot, but summer is when I can visit. It's a trek to get there, but the train ride on the retro Kominato Railway is an adventure in itself. On my trips, I start at Yorokeiko Station and descend into the cool valley. The Shusse Kannon Temple and the bridge connecting to it is a lovely view spot. The gently flowing Yoro River keeps the whole place cool, and it's shady and peaceful. I have yet to try the black water at the onsens there, but I dip my feet in the ashiyu foot bath outside the station before I make my way home.
