Retro-feeling cafe

If you like the Showa vibe of some cafes in Japan, Galant in Ueno is one to add to your list when you're in the area. It has been around for almost 50 years, and honestly, it feels like a bit of a time warp in some respects -- for instance, smoking is allowed in the entire venue, and they won't permit anyone under 20 in for that reason (so this is one for your parent-day-out rather than a trip with the kiddos). The food and drink items also bring the retro element, with sandwiches, omurice, and soda floats just some of the offerings. Personally, I'd prefer a non-smoking establishment, but it's incredibly clear that it's the case before you even walk in -- even so far as to have English on the sign -- so I can't complain too much.
