Modernity in Japan's culture capital
There are quite a few good looking stations here in Japan, but Kyoto Station is up there with the best. For architecture fans, it's the work of Hiroshi Hara, who was also responsible for the likes of the Umeda Sky Building and the Sapporo Dome. Plenty of amenities inside to keep you busy, including Museum Eki Kyoto which has a variety of rotating art exhibits throughout the year.

Futuristic Kyoto landmark
Even if you read up on futuristic Kyoto Station before your visit, you might be surprised by the stark, modern, and symmetrical structure. The 15 story structure has its critics, but it's clean, easy to navigate, and is chock full of amenities. I recommend you go up to the "sky garden" at the top to view the city. If you look deeper, the station has architectural features that recognize the orderly compass orientation of the city and has displays and shops that feature Kyoto's culture.
