Tsunami observed further to strong earthquake
At approximately 16:54 today, April 20th, 2026, we felt a very long earthquake in Saitama Prefecture. I promptly turned on the television for live coverage and discovered the epicenter was miles away, off the coast of Sanriku. Six minutes after the earthquake had started my lampshades were still shaking. That is quite unusual.
Both the earthquake and tsunami alerts were prompt. And the tsunami coverage is ongoing more than an hour later. Several Tsunami have been observed in the region in the prefectures of Iwate and Miyagi and in Hokkaido also. More Tsunami are expected. A very important note about tsunami is that the first isn't usually the biggest, they often get larger with each approach.
The Tsunami warnings are still in place for the central part of the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, the coast of Iwate and Miyagi. An evacuation order is in place. If you are along the coast in the region, it is advised that you evacuate to higher ground immediately. Also, another important note - the area of Tsunami is wider than first forecasted. If you are in the area, please follow the updates live on NHK - they have full English reporting. You can also find live reports online.
