Women's Day 80 years after the first true universal suffrage system
Today, and April 10th annually, is Women's Day in Japan. It commemorates a major turning point in Japan's history - universal suffrage that also allowed women to vote.
As I wrote on February 20th; in 1928 the first general election conducted under UNIVERSAL MALE SUFFRAGE took place in Japan. But it wasn't until 1946, on this day - April 10th - that women in Japan were legally able to vote for the first time. It was also the first time they were allowed run for office. In that election, 89 women ran as candidates and 39 were elected.
To honor this milestone, the former Ministry of labor established "Women's Day Convention", which eventually became today's "Women's Day".

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
