Another day and also a week dedicated to Japan's postal service

On January 24th I wrote about the Postal (Mail) System Implementation Memorial Day 郵便制度施行記念日 (yuubin seido shiki kinenbi) in Japan. But today, April 20th, also marks another postal service commemoration day. And as I love any excuse to share a postbox photo - here is some information about today's anniversary.

Today's postal service-related commemoration / anniversary is called Postal Service Memorial Day 郵政記念日(Yūseikinenbi). It has actually gone back and forth between two different names over the years. The other name is Communications Memorial Day 逓信記念日 (Teishinkinenbi). But the current name has been in place since 2001. These changes are due to the evolving structure of Japan's communication services.

"Postal Service Memorial Day" commemorates both the infrastructure and the people that keep Japan's postal system alive and the people of Japan connected. This day also marks the start of Postal Week which is from April 20th to 26th. In addition, it overlaps with Stamp Hobby Week, when special stamps are issued. This year is the 155th anniversary of Japan Post.
