Deutzia, a birthday flower of April 14th

Deutzia, known in Japanese as ウツギ (空木) is an early summer shrub with delicate white or pale pink blossoms. The name "空木" is made up of the characters for empty and tree, comes from the hollow pith inside its stems, a small botanical detail that gives the plant a uniqueness. In English it is simply called Deutzia after the Dutch botanist Johann van der Deutz.

In Japan it blooms from May to June. It produces clusters of small, star shaped flowers that gather at the tips of the slender branches, creating a light, airy silhouette. In Japan, it has long been associated with quiet beauty. In the Japanese language of flowers, 'hanakotoba', it means "secrecy" and "old fashioned elegance".

Apart from April 14th, Deutzia is also the birthday flower of June 4th, at which time it is normally in bloom.
