The description
Hokkaido brand Mitsuba produces dairy products. This item is Yotsuba Tokachi cheddar. The 100-gram block of white cheddar is semi-hard and unsliced. I found it at Co-Op in Kasukabe City.
The good
"Many's the long night I've dreamed of cheese--toasted mostly." I can relate to Ben Gunn, the marooned sailor in Treasure Island, longing for food from home. And just like Ben, it's the cheese. Japan's got a thing for processed cheese, and I don't get it. When I spy proper cheese, I go for it. This time, it's Yotsuba brand Hokkaido Tokachi Cheddar Cheese. The unsliced block of white cheddar is made with Hokkaido milk. The cheese is mildly sharp, a little bitter and tart. It melts well in the toaster oven.
The not so good
Yotsuba brand Hokkaido Tokachi Cheddar Cheese is not bad. I think I got a good deal at Co-Op - under 400 yen for 100 grams. This is not exactly like I remember cheddar cheese. It's nice to find white cheddar free of colouring. It does nothing for me or the cheese. The cheese has good creaminess. It's lightly tart and mildly sharp. However, it resembles the processed cheese so common here. It's not the least bit crumbly. "You mightn't happen to have a piece of cheese about you, now?" asks Ben. The search for cheese goes on.
