Things I didn't try early on: Kamakurabori
Kamakurabori is something I didn't try (or honestly, even know about) until about 6 or 7 years into my Japan life journey! I've found myself becoming more and more of a fan of Japanese artisanship during my time here, and I got to try it out for myself on a monitor tour in Kamakura.

The experts are so incredibly proficient at this artform
Basically, it involves carving patterns into wood, and then lacquering it. The masters of the craft can create some really intricate patterns, but for me as a participant I was able to pick a simpler design (I opted for a fish) and try to carve it out.

Let's just say it's easier said than done!
Getting to try out hands-on experiences like these during my time here has given me such a huge appreciation for the level of practice and the level of skill it requires to get really good at these kinds of crafts. If you ever get the opportunity to try out these traditional experiences, I emphatically recommend it!
