What Japan's women over 50 want from fashion

I know we talk about clothes a bit here on City-Cost, whether it's finding places for casual wear that fits our expat shapes, to looking for office attire, or even plus-sized formal wear. I saw results of a study online recently which looked at how women in Japan over 50 are rethinking their approach to fashion, and while I'm not quite at that age, many expats may see themselves reflected in the results.

Of the 430 women surveyed nationwide, 66% said they spend less than 5,000 yen per item, and nearly 90% stay under 10,000 yen, showing a preference for affordable, practical style over luxury labels. The two biggest struggles cited were finding clothes in an "easy-to-buy price range" (52%) and garments that flatter a changing body shape (37%).

Body changes, particularly around the waist and hips (63%), as well as the arms and shoulders (34%) were identified as a couple of key factors influencing wardrobe choices. Many participants also said they look for designs that feel elegant but not too youthful, reflecting a desire for maturity without giving up a sense of fashion.

Do you find shopping here to be difficult? Do you relate to any of the major wardrobe factor choices outlined in the survey?
