Reflecting on photo day
Today, and April 10th annually, is Photo Day フォトの日 in Japan. The date of the anniversary comes from a play on how 4/10 can be read as "pho (4) to (10)" in Japanese. But the meaning behind it runs a bit deeper.
The anniversary was created by a committee that was established with the sole purpose of creating a "photo day" anniversary. It is a committee made up of major camera and electronic manufacturers, such as Bic Camera, Kitamura and Yodobashi Camera. April is a season of beginnings in Japan and thus a natural period to take photos.
Photo Day encourages people to go beyond simply taking pictures; it invites them to print, display, and share them, turning digital moments into tangible keepsakes. To mark the occasion, companies like Bic Camera host social‑media photo contests, while Kitamura offers discounts and small gifts for printing services.
