More and more festivals shifting dates due to weather
For many of us living in Japan, summer festivals are a highlight of the year. The fireworks, food stalls, and crowds in yukata create a nostalgic and quintessentially Japanese experience, and some of our local events are chalked up there with my favorite memories.
Summer in Japan has its beauty, no doubt, but increasing heat is shifting schedules for many events.
In saying that, summers seem to be getting hotter and hotter each year, which is causing a lot of event organizers to shift dates in the hopes of attracting more people and avoiding weather-based cancelations. For instance, that article mentions the popular Adachi Fireworks Festival, which is actually taking place tomorrow (May 31st) instead of the usual late July timeframe. It's certainly not the only event that has had to do a bit of a switcheroo, either.
Checking event schedules in advance is now more important than ever, especially if you’re traveling with kids or elderly family members. A festival you assumed was in July or August might now take place in spring or early autumn.
Do you know of any summer events in your corner of Japan that have had to shift dates because of increasing heat concerns?
