A major visa route has closed for working in Japan

I saw an article this morning that Japan has stopped accepting new visa applications for foreign restaurant workers under its Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program after the food service category neared its five-year cap of 50,000 workers. With roughly 46,000 already in the sector as of February, immigration authorities expect the quota to be reached imminently.

For expats in Japan, I think this matters for a few reasons. First of all, it could directly affect international students and part-time workers who planned to transition from casual restaurant jobs into full-time hospitality roles after graduation. Several major chains had reportedly been preparing workers for that move, only to have their plans halted overnight.

It's also a reminder that while many industries here actively recruit overseas talent, visa availability can shift quickly depending on demand and government caps. For people hoping to move to Japan for restaurant or hospitality work, this particular route is effectively closed for now unless the cap is increased.
